Plants That Love Murrieta

Our warm summers and mild winters support many Mediterranean and native plants. These five options perform well; follow our simple tips for success:
  • Crape Myrtle: a small tree that produces showy blooms from mid to late summer; plant it in full sun and well drained soil, water weekly until established then water every ten to fourteen days and prune lightly in winter.
  • California Bay: an evergreen tree native to coastal forests; it prefers partial to full sun and deep, infrequent watering, mulch around the base to conserve moisture.
  • Catalina Cherry: an evergreen with red berries and white flowers; plant it in full sun, water regularly until roots are established then enjoy its drought tolerance.
  • Ribes (Currant): a native shrub that thrives in Southern California; it likes light shade and moist soil, add compost when planting and water weekly during the first year.
  • Achillea (Tarrow): a drought tolerant perennial; it enjoys full sun and poor soil, sow seeds or plant divisions in fall, water until established then reduce irrigation.

About Murrieta, CA

Murrieta is a city located in southwestern Riverside County, California, situated within the Temecula Valley-a graben rift valley shaped by the Elsinore Fault Zone and framed by the Temescal Mountains to the west and the Santa Ana Mountains to the east. The city’s terrain encompasses approximately 33.6 square miles, nearly all of which is land, with just 0.11% covered by water. Murrieta Creek flows southeasterly through the valley and, with its tributaries like Warm Springs Creek, eventually contributes to the Santa Margarita River.

The area that would become Murrieta was originally inhabited by the Luiseño people, who established a village on the land long before European settlement. In 1873, Spanish-born Basque sheep ranchers Ezequiel and Juan Murrieta, along with partners, acquired the Rancho Pauba and Rancho Temecula land grants-totalling about 52,000 acres-with the intent to graze sheep there. Ezequiel returned to Spain, and Juan took over, moving thousands of sheep into the valley-this marked the foundational moment of the settlement and gave rise to its name: Murrieta.
